Custom furniture

Cedar: from a website request to a finished piece of furniture

A request sent from the website turns straight into an order in the workshop’s panel, and the client follows that same order in the app.

Watch the demo
Before

A custom furniture workshop takes requests over messengers, works out prices in a spreadsheet and phones the client when the piece is ready. That’s three separate places, and an order can slip through the cracks in any of them.

After

We pulled it all into one product: a website with a configurator, an order panel for the workshop and an app for the client. The order is created once, and everyone works with that same record.

One order on three screens

Studio concept · fictional data · no network or database
  1. The client chooses a model, sets the dimensions and material, and asks for a quote. Order #1042 shows up in the panel marked “New from website”.

  2. The manager prices the order, assigns a craftsman and moves it to “In production”. Everything happens on a kanban board, with an order card and a full history of changes.

  3. The client can see which stage the order is at, when it should be ready and how to reach the craftsman. Whenever the stage changes in the panel, the app sends a push notification.

Decisions

  1. Configurator instead of a form

The client picks dimensions and material before sending the request.

    Why we chose this

The manager can price it straight away and doesn’t have to call back with five questions.

  2. Stages instead of statuses

Every order goes through the same five stages: quote, production, finishing, delivery and done.

    Why we chose this

The client knows what’s happening, and the workshop knows what comes next.

  3. One database for three interfaces

The website, the panel and the app all read the same data.

    Why we chose this

Nobody copies anything by hand, so the status is the same wherever you look.

Product UI kit

Warm paper tones and the workshop’s deep green. Clients get large headings, the panel gets dense tables, and all three screens are built from one set of components.

Under the hood

The web service runs on Next.js with a single API, a PostgreSQL database and push notifications. The panel and the app are two roles in the same system.
